Celebrating ceremony the 18th International Social Work Day

On November 11th, in Hanoi, Ministry of Labour – Invalids and Social Affairs in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Trade Union University and the Project on support the Development of Social work in Vietnam organized the 18th celebrating ceremony of the International Social Work Day with the theme of “Vietnam Social Work – The Challenges to Professionalism in the Context of Integration and Development”.

 Attending the event were Mrs. Nguyen Thi Doan – Vice President of Vietnam; Mrs. Pham Thi Hai Chuyen – Minister of Labour – Invalids and Social Affairs; Mrs. Truong Thi Mai – Chairwoman of the NA’s Committee for Social Affairs; Mr. Dang Ngoc Tung – President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour; Mr. Jesper Moller, Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Vietnam; Dr. Pham Van Ha – President of Trade Union University and many guests from the related agencies.

In the opening speech, Dr. Pham Van Ha emphasized the importance of the training of social work in the requirement of integration and development. He expected that in the series of the celebrating activities of the 18th International Social Work Day would be the chance for the scientists, lecturers, students in the profession of social work to exchange, discuss and share the experience and find out the practical solution to social work development.

In the speech at the ceremony, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan highlighted that Social work is the professional work with the aim at mobilizing all resource of the whole community to deal with the social issues; improve the quality of life, social welfare and happiness of human for the advancement, fairness and prosperity of the society. In Vietnam, social work has played the significant role, one of the criteria ensuring social security, enhancing the sustainable stable development, in bringing Vietnam from the poor country to become the world’s spotlight on the implementation of Millennium Development Goals and prominent achievements in socio-economic activities in the innovation period of the nation.

Currently, although the legal framework had some state management documents issued, it still lacked of the important legal documents relating to define the role, position of social workers, task of social workers. Moreover, the System of Social work service has developed slowly. Though the network providing social work service was established, the operation on providing social work service with the inclusive professional characteristics was still limited.

Social work requires not only the professional skills, but also the dedication. The factors will help process the issues effectively on the base of legal regulation. The high quality resource of the nation will be promoted, supplemented if we develop social work well. Whole community give hands to help the poor, the vulnerable groups and their children having a chance to study, participate in labour force, develop their families, society and the country. The success of the social security based on the social work and people who participate in this professional- the Vice President affirmed.

According to the statistic of MOLISA, on the whole country, there are 408  public and private social assistance establishments. The number of the establishment training social work professional are 55 universities, colleges and 21 vocational training institutions. The network of social workers with 80,000 officials, staffs, volunteers of are spreading to many provinces and cities …
